    World Cubing Association

3:04.11 was my best time of five.

I competed in a World Cube Association sponsored (Rubik's Cube) competition on October 24, 2009.

    It was GREAT.

I was very nervous and made mistakes, but I didn't give up and I finished! As a result I am now ranked #1,613th in the USA:

    Valerie Elson    4:22.44   USA  Caltech Fall 2009   3:04.11  DNF  6:35.83  3:13.61  3:17.88

If I hadn't quit the first solve when I lost concentration, I might have had a better average score. I didn't realize that the average would be of the remaining times, after the worst and the best scores were discarded. This means that if the solve I quit was under 6:35.83, my final average score would have been lower.

The whole experience has been exhilarating!

I must say, I'm hooked! I'm continuing to practice to increase my speed, and I'm developing plans to become a volunteer, teaching other senior citizens, like myself, to solve the cube. My daughter, Thea, and granddaughter, Lucia, are now hooked-up with youcandothecube.com and are determined to catch up (and I'm sure surpass) grandma on the Rubik's Cube. I couldn't be happier!

    Keep Cubbing! --Val

Thank you, dear. I'll be getting in touch with you sometime after the first of the year to discuss using youcandothecube.com's teaching materials for a more "mature" crowd. We'll see what happens.
